Price departs with a smile; fete celebrates 45-year Club career
The First Amendment Lounge erupted in cheers and clapping when Andrew Price walked in on Friday, Aug. 3, for his retirement party. Appearing relaxed in a short-sleeved purple plaid shirt, gray slacks and holding his cap in hand, he flashed the familiar endearing smile. Many things have changed at the National Press Club since 1967, when Price started working here, said Art Wiese, Club president in 1979. “A cup of coffee cost 25¢ and today it’s $2.55," Wiese said. New rules at the Federal Communications Commission make it easier to access data on purchases of TV airtime during political campaigns. Head table waiter Andrew Price ends remarkable 45-year career at Club, contemplates going fishing
In 1967, Andrew Price came to the National Press Club as a 20-year-old busboy. Much has changed since then, but Mr. Price has remained an enduring, if unassuming, presence at the Club for all the years since. Mr. Price worked his final Press Club Luncheon on July 24, serving a head table that included PBS news anchors Gwen Ifill and Judy Woodruff. When NPC President Theresa Werner announced to the gathering that Mr. Price would retire on Aug. 3 – 45 years to the day after he went to work at the Club – he received a standing ovation. “That made me feel great,” Mr. Price said in an interview…

Stellar journalists recognized for courage, best work
Distinguished journalists Marie Colvin and Anthony Shadid and freelance photographer Remi Ochlik were honored posthumously with the John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award at the National Press Club for the courageous work covering the Syrian civil war that claimed their lives earlier this year. The journalists were determined to make sure the Syria story was told, no matter the cost, friends, family and colleagues said. Teamsters President James P. Hoffa to speak at Sept. 13 luncheon
In a speech entitled, "Defining Patriotism: Protecting America and the American Worker," Teamsters President James P. Hoffa will talk about the prospects for the country's workforce and what the government should do to bolster the American worker at a National Press Club luncheon on Thursday, Sept. 13. Hoffa, who grew up on the picket lines and in union meetings, began his fourth term as the union's general president in 2011. Get in a last great dinner before the Fourth Estate closes for vacation Aug. 20
The Fourth Estate will close for two weeks from Monday, Aug. 20 through Sept. 1. The restaurant traditionally closes for two weeks in August and this year the period dovetails with the closure for Labor Day weekend, Sept. 1 to Sept. 3.
