Members' photo exhibit opens with reception, 6 pm Sept. 5
A reception honoring National Press Club members whose photos are displayed in the 13th Annual NPC Members' Photo Exhibit will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 5, in the Club lobby and Library classroom. This year's exhibit has 197 photos displayed by 54 member-photographers -- the largest number of photos ever submitted by the most member-photographers in the 13-year history of this exhibit. Cultural 'soft power' strategy could hasten Taiwan-China reconciliation, minister says
Decades after losing a civil war with China, Taiwan continues to suffer cultural isolation and is deprived of its right to participate in normal world affairs, Republic of China Minister of Culture Lung Yingtai told reporters at a National Press Club Newsmaker on Aug. 29. Afghan forces improve as U.S. withdraws, Marine Commandant tells Club luncheon
Afghanistan's armed forces are improving their capability as the U.S. military withdraws from the country, Marine Corps Commandant James F. Amos told a National Press Club luncheon audience on Aug. 28. On a recent tour of Helmand Province, Amos said he saw progress and developments that "turn more favorable and turn more favorable," Amos said. He acknowledged that there have been assaults on U.S. troops by Afghan soldiers and Taliban attacks on civilians. But, in general, security is improving. American Legion gives Club permanent Post, 1923
This Week In National Press Club History September 1, 1923: The American Legion issues a permanent charter to the National Press Club, known as the American Legion Post 20. One of the early members of the Post was Gen. John J. Pershing, commander of the American Expeditionary Force in World War I and an associate Club member whose name was listed on the Club’s roles in 1920 and 1924. Armstrong outlined top 20th Century engineering achievements at 2000 Club luncheon
Neil Armstong, the first man to walk on the moon, outlined the top engineering achievements in the 20th Century at a National Press Club luncheon on Feb. 22, 2000, nearly 31 years after his historic lunar moment. His speech, entitled "The Engineered Century," analyzed the National Academy of Engineering's top 20 choices. Topping the list were electronics, water purification, the airplane, the automobile and electrification. View the video of the event here. Armstrong died at 82 on Aug. 25.
