Honored CIA official and NPC member Joe L. Zaring dies Joe L. Zaring, 91, a recipient of one of the intelligence community's highest honors and a veteran National Press Club member, died Sept. 17 at Washington's Sibley Hospital. Zaring, 91, lived in Washington, D.C. and had been an NPC member for 13 years. He joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1951 and spent 30 years there, working in the Western European division of the agency's Directorate of Intelligence. Hughes resigns NPC Board seat effective Jan. 17, opening another seat for election
NPC Board Chair John Hughes, has resigned from the Board of Governors, effective Jan. 17, 2013, to seek election as Club treasurer. Hughes' resignation opens a journalist seat on the board for the remaining year of Hughes' three-year term. Interested journalist candidates for the one-year term may circulate nominating petitions until Oct. 26. Education Secretary Duncan urges Congress to support early-childhood schooling
Secretary of Education Arne Duncan urged Congress not to reduce funding for early childhood education at a National Press Club luncheon on Oct. 2. "Candidly speaking, however, it's a challenge in the current climate," Duncan told a sold-out Club ballroom. "If some members of the House have their way, programs like Head Start, Title I and IDEA [Individuals With Disabilities Education Act] could take a big hit. Rivlin, Walker to discuss fiscal message of U.S. bus tour, 1 pm Oct. 10
David Walker, CEO of Comeback America and former head of the U.S. Government Accountability Office, and Alice Rivlin, member of the Presidential Debt Commission and former head of the Office of Management and Budget, will discuss the national debt, health care policy and tax reform at a National Press Club Newsmaker panel at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, in the Zenger Room.
