Press Club expresses concern over reported attacks on journalists in Gaza
The National Press Club has expressed grave concern about reports of recent attacks on reporters by Israeli military forces and urged militaries everywhere to safeguard the press during armed conflicts. During the recent fighting in Gaza, Israel Defense Forces reportedly injured numerous reporters and killed in a drone strike three people who some said were reporters but who the Israeli government said were terrorists. Wife, lawyer to discuss Alan Gross case at Nov. 30 Newsmaker
The case of Alan Gross, a U.S. Agency for International Development subcontractor who remains in a Cuban prison, will be the subject of Newmaker on Friday, Nov. 30. Gross' wife, Judy, and their lawyer, Jared Genser, will speak. Club member Paul Dickson, author of several baseball books including the Dickson Baseball Dictionary, will receive the fifth annual Jerome Holtzman Award from the Chicago-based Pitch & Hit Club on Jan. 27. The award is given each year to a person who reflects the values and spirit of Holtzman, the late sportswriter for the Chicago Sun-Times and then the Chicago Tribune, and who makes a significant contribution to promoting baseball in the Windy City. Singer James Taylor is scheduled to speak at a Club Luncheon on Friday, Dec. 7. Taylor, a singer-songwriter and guitarist, is a five-time Grammy Award winner. Press Club to host screening of documentary on investigative reporting in Mexico
The Club, along with Reporters Without Borders, is hosting a screening of a new PBS documentary, Reportero, at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 12. The documentary looks at the risks of investigative journalism in Mexico. The film follows a veteran reporter and his colleagues at Zeta, the Tijuana-based independent newsweekly, as they ply their trade in one of the deadliest places in the world for members of the media.
