Dave Barry to discuss new book at Club
Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist and best-selling author, Dave Barry, will discuss his new book "Insane City" at 1 pm on Feb. 1 at the Club. A book signing will follow the discussion. Registration is required at www.press.org/events/barry. Tickets are free for NPC members and $5 for the general public. This event is a fundraiser for the National Press Club Journalism Institute. The Club offers special events for its members year round. Our next event will be held on New Year’s Eve in the Fourth Estate Restaurant. Members can ring in the New Year with dishes such as grilled Virginia oysters, seared duck and apple streusel cake with bourbon cream cheese icing. Final Pub Quiz of 2012 scheduled for Dec. 20
The monthly Pub Quiz, one of the Club's most popular events -- the monthly Pub Quiz -- is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 20, in the Truman Lounge. Marc Wojno will be returning to emcee the final 2012 edition. Teams of Know-It-Alls should assemble in the lounge at 7 pm. Panetta urges Congress to avoid fiscal cliff, adopt administration defense strategy
Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta used a Dec. 18 National Press Club luncheon to urge Congress to “do the right thing” by avoiding the across-the-board spending cuts of the “fiscal cliff” and approving the defense strategy contained in the Defense Department’s budget proposal. The fiscal cliff refers to the more than $600 billion in automatic spending cuts and tax increases scheduled to go into effect beginning next month unless Congress acts. Ring in the New Year with lower prices at the Fourth Estate Restaurant
The Fourth Estate restaurant is hosting a New Year's Eve Dinner on Monday, Dec. 31, with seatings at 6:30 pm and 8:30 pm. To celebrate the 2012 presidential election, the restaurant will charge the same prices as in 2008, the year of the previous election. This week In National Press Club history
Dec. 15, 1921: President Warren G. Harding, the only U.S. president to be qualified to join the Club in what is now the Journalist category, casts his vote in the 13th election of officers. While in the White House, Harding, a former publisher of the Marion (Ohio) Star, voted in other Club elections, attended Club events, and played poker with reporters on at least one occasion. Nutcracker, Dying Swan featured at Newsmaker event
Moscow Ballet Prima Ballerina Ukrainian Olga Kifyak and colleagues danced and played selections from Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite" and The Dying Swan from St. Saens' "Carnival of the Animals" at an NPC Newsmaker Dec. 14. For the Nutcraker number, ballerina Kifyak was partnered with dancer Victor Sherbakov.For The Dying Swan, she was musically accompanied by 16-year-old Russian Fedor Oukspensky, a high school student in Northern Virginia, who himself was accompanied on the piano by his mother.
