National Press Club calls for protection of journalists in Syria
The National Press Club voiced its serious concern over the status of journalists whose lives are at risk as they cover the conflict in Syria. A number of reporters and media workers have been killed or have gone missing in Syria since the war began, while others have been held prisoner by rebels or by Syrian government personnel. "Reporters in Syria must be free to do their jobs without fear for their well being or lives," said Club President Theresa Werner. Former Haitian envoy to discuss reforestation plan, 4 pm Jan. 10
Raymond Joseph, a former Haitian ambassador to the United States, will explore the importance of rebuilding his country's forests and promoting alternatives to wood for cooking at a National Press Club Newsmaker at 4 p.m. Jan. 10. Joseph recently established a non-profit organization to support environmental protection in Haiti, A Dollar a Tree for Haiti. The 2010 earthquake devastated the Caribbean country, whose tree cover is estimated at only 1.5 percent. If the decline is not reversed, Joseph said, "Haiti will soon become a desert."

NPC Journalism Institute offers database, spreadsheet training in January
The NPC Journalism Institute is diving back into data journalism Monday, Jan. 7, with the first of four new classes – two for spreadsheets and two for databases. The spreadsheet class on Jan. 7 and the next one on Jan. 14 will be taught by JoElla Straley from NPR's research library . The database class will be taught by David Donald, data editor at the Center for Public Integrity, who has taught journalists all over the country how to extract great stories from piles of data.
