Ex-ambassador urges broad review of State Dept. in wake of Benghazi attack
Retired Ambassador Prudence Bushnell, in the wake of last year's attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya, advocated extensive review of the State Department's mission and operation at a March 5 National Press Club Newsmaker. Bushnell was chief of mission of the U.S. embassy in Kenya when it was bombed by Al Qaeda in 1998, wounding her and killing both Americans and Kenyans. MARCH 3, 1971: Twenty-four women are sworn in as the first female members of the National Press Club, after a historic January vote in favor of their admission, 227 to 56. Forty-two Januarys later, Angela Greiling Keane is inaugurated as the 11th woman elected president of the Club. It was 1913 again in the National Press Club Ballroom Feb. 28. At a gala Club reception commemorating the 1913 march in Washington that led to voting rights for women, arriving guests were greeted at the door by female “suffragists” dressed in period costumes, sporting banners and carrying signs with messages such as “Democracy Should Begin At Home.” The women did not smile when posing for photos, clearly paying homage to their forebears, for whom the quest for the vote was a solemn pursuit. Renowned press photographer and Club member Ed Wergeles dies
Ed Wergeles, an award-winning, globe-trotting photographer and editor for both Newsweek and Forbes, and a National Press Club member for more than 60 years, died in Solvang, Calif., Jan. 6 shortly before his 94th birthday. By the time he was 12, Wergeles had his own darkroom and was hooked on photography, his daughter, Wendy Wergeles said as she reviewed biographical notes of her father that her mother, Merry Hannula Wergeles, had put together.
