Excerpts of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s National Press Club speech will be aired for the first time since they were delivered 53 years ago at a special event at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 12, in the ballroom. Admission is free, but reservations are required. In July 1962, Dr. King became the first African American to speak at the Club. An audio recording was made of the speech and filed away in the Club’s Archives and later transferred to the Library of Congress. No television footage of the speech in its entirety exists. Learn how to interview sexual assault victims, 1 pm Jan. 8
Perhaps no task is as daunting for reporters than interviewing a victim of sexual assault. A panel of experts will address how best to avoid pitfalls that could compromise a good story or unnecessarily harm a victim at a National Press Club event at 1 p.m. Jan. 8 in the Zenger Room. A panel of former National Press Club presidents told an audience of journalism students to develop expertise, be flexible and write well to build their careers at a Dec. 16 NPC Journalism Institute event. Myron Belkind, former AP bureau chief in New Delhi, London and Tokyo and 2014 Club president, said journalists traditionally were trained to be generalists. Estonian foreign minister cites security, terrorism, refugees as country's biggest challenges
Estonia Foreign Minister Marina Kaljurand said that security is the top concern for her country, following aggressive Russian military activities in neighboring Ukraine and in the Crimea. Anastasia Lin, the 2015 Miss World Canada, urged businesses and global organizations, such as Miss World and the International Olympic Committee, to pressure China to improve human rights in the country, in a National Press Club luncheon speech on Dec. 18. Canada's Miss World contestant to speak at Club Luncheon Friday
Canada's Miss World contestant, Anastasia Lin. will speak at a Club luncheon on Friday, Dec. 18, a day before she was supposed to compete for the title in China but was denied a visa. Lin, who emigrated to Canada as an adolescent, has testified before Congress on human rights in China and written an op-ed on the topic in The Washington Post.
