Reliable Source Bartender Richard McClary to Retire Thursday
Richard McClary, the happy hour, dinner and late night bartender at the National Press Club's Reliable Source bar, is hanging up his vest and retiring on Thursday night after 49 years of service to the Club. "I started as a barback and got on-the-job training," "Richie" said. In 1967, when he started, the bar was where the Library is and vice versa. McClary plans to stay in the Washington area, but he has already been told at home, "I can no longer spend every day at a bar with my friends." The National Press Club's Books & Brunch group will discuss “The Invention of Wings” by Sue Monk Kidd at noon on Saturday, Jan 23, in the Fourth Estate Restaurant. The novel is a fictionalized history of Sarah Grimke (1792-1873) and her sister Angelina (1805-1879), who were pioneering advocates in both the abolitionist and women’s rights movements. Relive Dr. Martin Luther King's 1962 NPC Speech on Jan. 12
Excerpts of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s National Press Club speech will be aired during a special 7:30 p.m. event on Tuesday, Jan. 12, in the Club's ballroom for the first time since they were delivered 53 years ago. In July 1962 King became the first African American to speak at the Club. An audio recording was made of the speech and filed away in the Club’s Archives and later transferred to the Library of Congress. No television footage of the speech in its entirety exists. Tommy Burr will mark the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service when he is inaugurated as the Club's 109th president on Saturday, Jan. 23.
