Panel explores context of MLK's 1962 speech at NPC
On July 19, 1962, Martin Luther King Jr. became the first African American to address the National Press Club. Nearly fifty-three years later on Jan. 12, portions of the speech were played for the first time since being delivered in the Club ballroom where King stood. Selective Service System Director Lawrence G. Romo, at a National Press Club Newsmaker on Jan. 29, plans to discuss timely topics such as the prospect of women being required to register for any future draft now that they have been approved to serve in all combat roles. Richard McClary's retirement party and cake-cutting on Jan. 13, 3:30 p.m.
After 49 plus years serving drinks to Press Club members, Reliable Source Bartender Richard McClary retired at the end of last year. To honor Richard and to meet his family, all Press Club members are invited to a cake cutting ceremony Wednesday, Jan. 13. The event will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the First Amendment Lounge. Richard was the longest tenured employee in Press Club history, tending bar through the administrations of some 50 Club presidents and nine U.S. Presidents. He will be missed by all who had the good fortune to know him.
