Club honors jailed journalists with Press Freedom awards
The top honorees at the National Press Club awards dinner on July 29 couldn’t attend the event – not due to deadlines or travel but because they are in jail. The Club presented its John Aubuchon Press Freedom Award to two U.S. reporters – Jason Rezaian of The Washington Post and freelance reporter Austin Tice – and a foreign correspondent – Khadija Ismayilova of Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty – who are being detained in Iran, Syria and Azerbaijan, respectively. NPC member Herman to debut novel at Aug. 26 Book Rap
Well-known nonfiction author and National Press Club member Eleanor Herman plans to debut her first novel, "Legacy of Kings: Blood of Gods and Royals," at a National Press Club Book Rap on Wednesday, Aug. 26 at 6:30 p.m. The event includes an author discussion, questions-and-answers from the audience, and book signing. African diplomats express satisfaction with African Growth and Opportunity Act reauthorization
The ambassador of Gabon, Michael Moussa-Adamo, told a National Press Club Newsmaker on July 28 that the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) was “an outstanding example of a trade law that has generated success in the long term.” Moussa-Adamo, who co-chairs AGOA with Ambassador Eliachim Molapi Sebatane of Lesotho, was one of several African diplomats who spoke on the impact of AGOA on African countries. Deadline looming for Members’ Photo Exhibit shots
Photo entries for the 16th Annual NPC Members’ Photography Exhibit are due by close of business Friday, Aug. 14. Prints may be dropped off in the Club’s Membership Office starting Monday, Aug. 3. Each member may submit up to four photos. Photos may not exceed 11” x 14” (print and mat). All photos must be securely mounted and matted. The exhibit, sponsored by the Club’s Photography Committee, is open to all Club members and is not juried.
