Nikki Haley, who described herself a conservative Republican, said her party must “change our approach” to blacks and other minorities by listening carefully to their concerns and trying hard to meet them. National Press Club Calls on Azerbaijan to Free Jailed Journalists
The National Press Club called on Azerbaijan to free journalists jailed in that country on spurious charges. On Sept. 1, an Azeri court sentenced Khadija Ismayilova, a reporter who has written for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty and other news organizations, to seven and a half years in jail, ostensibly for illegal business activity, tax evasion, embezzlement and abuse of power. She has been imprisoned since December 2014. Congressman Rostenkowski discussed his plan to eliminate the budget deficit in 5 years. The plan includes tax increases, deep defense cuts, and a one year freeze on domestic spending and Social Security cost of living increases. NPC member Rabbi Harold S. White dies
Rabbi Harold S. White, the Jewish chaplain at Georgetown University from 1968 until his retirement in 2009 and a National Press Club member since 2013, died Monday, Aug. 31 following a stroke earlier in the month while visiting his native Connecticut. He was 83. NPC member Connie Lawn sponsored Rabbi White’s membership in the Club as a communicator, and one of his last visits to the NPC was to attend a book party on May 21 celebrating her new autobiography, “You Wake Me Each Morning: The Final Chapter.” Rabbi White helped greet guests as he sat next to Connie as she signed copies of her book…

The National Press Club sharply disapproves of recent incidents of journalist harassment and repression in Turkey. According to news reports, two British journalists for Vice News and a Turkish assistant were arrested in Diyarbakir, Turkey and charged yesterday with aiding terrorists.
