The National Press Club on Friday voiced its serious concern over the Turkish government's move to seize control of a leading opposition newspaper and other affiliated news outlets, the latest action in a troubling series of crackdowns on independent journalism in the country. The National Press Club will welcome home Washington Post reporter Jason Rezaian at a reception at 7 p.m. March 14 in the ballroom. The private event for Club members, Rezaian's colleagues and invited guests also will be open to the media. RSVP online. Rezaian spent 545 days isolated in an Iranian prison, after being arrested by the government and unjustly convicted. Larry McQuillan, former White House correspondent, dies at 70
Larry McQuillan, a long-time White House correspondent who since 2004 was public affairs director for the American Institutes for Research (AIR), died Sept. 19 after a three-year battle with cancer. He was 70 and had been a National Press Club member for nearly 11 years. A native of Stratford, Conn., Larry lived in Silver Spring, Md., and was a graduate of St. Bonaventure School of Journalism and Mass Communication.
