The National Press Club lent its voice today to a worldwide appeal for Egyptian authorities to release all jailed journalists, including four from Al Jazeera who have been imprisoned for months. The National Press Club is joining other media groups in endorsing legislation that would strengthen the U.S. Freedom of Information Act, which journalists and the general public use to compel the release of otherwise hidden government documents. Senator Patrick Leahy, a Vermont Democrat, and Senator John Cornyn, a Texas Republican, introduced the FOIA Improvement Act on June 24. The legislation would clarify that the government's FOIA ombudsman, formally known as the Office of Government Information Services, may issue advisory opinions that don't have to adhere to administration policy. The National Press Club on Tuesday strongly protested the sentencing of three Al Jazeera reporters by an Egyptian court and renewed its urging for their prompt release. Press Club lauds release of jailed journalist in Egypt, urges court to free others
The National Press Club expressed relief that an al Jazeera reporter has been released from jail in Egypt, but the Club called on authorities there also to release other journalists held prisoner for doing their jobs. Abdullah Elshamy, an Al-Jazeera correspondent, had been held without formal charge since August 2013 and was freed on June 16 on medical grounds.
