Longtime National Press Club member Connie Lawn was honored at a ceremony Thursday with a key to her hometown of Long Branch, N.J., and Mayor Adam Schneider proclaiming Nov. 22, 2016, as “Connie Lawn Day.” She once described her hometown this way: “Long Branch gave me a toughness I have needed to survive in the challenging worlds of reporting, politics, and business. Toastmasters meets Monday
The National Press Club's Toastmasters group will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the McClendon Room. Admission is free. Participates will practice prepared deliveries, get to think on their feet when responding to spontaneous questions, and listen to others while sharing feedback. The group regularly meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at 7 p.m., though will not meet Dec. 26.

Club member Erickson Blakney's film on Jonestown, Miss., development airs Dec. 12
The second film in a documentary series produced by National Press Club member Erickson S. Blakney will air at 10 p.m. Monday, Dec. 12, on Mississippi Public Broadcasting television. “Enriching Destiny” recounts how the special partnership between the residents of Jonestown, Miss., and Sister Teresa Shields and the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus built the Jonestown Family Center for Education and Wellness to bring education and health opportunities to their community. Club members witnessed Pearl Harbor, Pacific campaign firsthand
A future member of the National Press Club watched in stunned horror 75 years ago today as aircraft from the Japanese Imperial Navy fired bullets into his house on a Pearl Harbor hillside, sank or damaged much of the U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet, and killed thousands of Americans. John Harllee, who was an associate member of the Club until his death in 2005 at the age of 91, helped avenge the toll of 2,403 killed and 1,178 wounded in the Sunday morning attack that launched U.S. participation in World War II by becoming a decorated combat veteran of PT boat forces. Today: Vote in the Club election
Vote today in the National Press Club election and then watch the results come in tonight in the Reliable Source. Polls for in-person voting at the Club opened at 8 a.m. and will close at 7 p.m. The results will be tabulated and announced when counting is finished, perhaps as early as 7:30 p.m. Club officers and both journalist and communicator seats on the Board of Governors are on the ballot.
