"Card Carriers: Virtually every president of the United States has been an associate or honorary member of the National Press Club since its founding in 1908. But only one president was professionally qualified to be an active member. He was Warren Harding, former publisher of The Marion Star newspaper in Ohio. While in the White House, Harding voted in Club elections, attended Club events and played poker with reporters on at least one occasion. Valentine’s Day provides a mid-week love-in the Fourth Estate Restaurant
The Fourth Estate will offer a special fixed price dinner menu to celebrate Valentine’s Day Tuesday, Feb.14. Dinner is served in two seatings, at 5:30 p.m. or 8 p.m. for $110 per member couple. Choices include warm and comforting beef short ribs and the always fun whole lobster. Vegetarians can feast on heart shaped cheese ravioli. Battle of Midway vet to be special guest at Legion Post meeting, May 31
Battle of Midway veteran Jack Crawford will be a special guest at a luncheon meeting of American Legion Post 20, which is associated with the National Press Club, at 12 noon on Thursday, May 31, in the McClendon Room. A retired Navy captain and U.S. Naval Academy graduate, Crawford was a junior officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, which was sunk during the battle. He abandoned ship with the rest of the crew before the ship went down. National Press Club member Gene Policinski, president of The Newseum Institute and its First Amendment Center, will receive the Distinguished Service Award from the D.C. Pro Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists at a dinner at the National Press Club on Tuesday, June 12. Books & Brunch to discuss 'Lincoln in the Bardo' this Saturday
The National Press Club's Books and Brunch group will discuss the book "Lincoln in the Bardo," by George Saunders, at noon on Saturday, May 19, in the Fourth Estate Restaurant. Saunders won the 2017 Man Booker Prize for this novel. He is only the second American to win the award. The novel is a combination of film script and Lincoln-focused scrapbook, alternating between ghost dialogues and excerpts from Civil War historical accounts from the Civil War. Former Club president publishes new Lafayette Square history
Former National Press Club President Gil Klein, who chairs the Club’s History and Heritage Team, is putting out a new book, “Trouble in Lafayette Square: Assassination, Protest and Murder at the White House.” Published by the History Press, it recounts the unusual happenings in Lafayette Square during the past 200 years. It includes a forward written by Washington Post columnist John Kelly. More about the book is available online.
