Aukofer elected Head Hoot of Silver Owls
The Council of Wisest Owls has elected Frank A. Aukofer as the Head Hoot of the Silver Owls, an organization within the National Press Club for members with 25 years or more of membership. Aukofer had been filling in for Head Hoot Arthur E. F. Wiese, who was stricken with a brain aneurysm on election day in 2012 and died in April 2016. Wiese served as Club president in 1979. Aukofer, retired Washington bureau chief of the Milwaukee Journal and Journal Sentinel, was president in 1978. Together, they received the Order of the Owl in 2009 from the Silver Owls. The new security gates are active. Resident members, next time you're at the National Press Club, please come by the offices to see a member of the NPC membership staff to set up your permanent Club access. NPC Toastmasters contest winners to compete at area contest; Next Toastmasters meeting, March 27
Congratulations to Shelja Purohit and Caitlin Vogus, winners of the NPC Toastmasters contest held March 20 for Best Speaker and Best Evaluator in the first leg of the annual international speech contest. Purohit and Vogus will now compete at the area level contest on April 4. Purohit gave an entertaining speech on the challenge of communicating generationally. One example was her emailed request to ‘have a word’ with her young male assistant. He responded, “A word?” and Purohit was a bit agitated by his terse response.
