James W. Canan, a Golden Owl and member of Pulitzer-winning team, 88
James W. Canan, a Golden Owl National Press Club member who was part of a Pulitzer Prize-winning team at Gannett, died Dec. 23 after a long illness. He was 88. A native of New Castle, Pennsylvania, Canan graduated from Westminster College and served as an intelligence officer in Europe during the Korean War. He worked for the Armed Forces Security Agency and the National Security Agency before attending journalism graduate school at Northwestern University. He was a reporter for The Vindicator of Youngstown, Ohio, and the Binghamton Press before joining Gannett in Washington in 1960. He was…

Edney to assume presidency at General Membership Meeting, Jan. 19
Andrea Snyder Edney, a breaking news editor at Bloomberg News, will officially take over the president’s gavel from current National Press Club President Jeff Ballou of Al Jazeera at the General Membership meeting set to take place at 12 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, in the Murrow, White and Lisagor rooms. Coast Guard head of public affairs to address NPC American Legion Post on Jan. 30
Rear Admiral Peter Gautier, Director of Governmental and Public Affairs for the U.S. Coast Guard, will be guest speaker at a luncheon meeting of National Press Club's American Legion Post 20 at 12 noon on Tuesday, Jan. 30, in the McClendon Room. Admiral Gautier is responsible for engagement with Congress, the media and intergovernmental entities. Obit: Drew Von Bergen, past NPC president
Drew Von Bergen, a former UPI correspondent and president of the National Press Club in 1980, died Monday, Dec. 18, 2017, of heart failure. He was 77 and lived in Alexandria, Va. Drew joined the Club in 1971 while working as a UPI regional reporter in Washington, D.C. A memorial service is scheduled for Jan. 24 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Club's Holeman Lounge. Former NPC president Myron Belkind an inspiration to journalists
Former National Press Club President Myron Belkind retired after more than four decades as a bureau chief for The Associated Press. But he’s keeping busy teaching news writing and reporting at George Washington University’s School of Media and Public Affairs. His work was recently featured in a story sent to AP alums and retirees.
