Revised house rules posted on NPC website
Last year, the House & Bar Committee reviewed NPC’s House Rules and recommended a series of changes to update and streamline them. The revised and restated rules were approved by the Board of Governors in January, and they are now posted on the Club’s website. While the revisions deleted some archaic rules and language, the substance stayed essentially the same. Provisions governing the use of cellphones, video and speakerphones were added, along with the Club’s policy on under-age drinking. Did you know: NPC has a softball team
The softball team opens its season on Saturday, April 11. All NPC members and spouses are eligible to play. There is no cost to join the team. The deadline for the White House Correspondents’ Association’s three awards in print and broadcast journalism is March 4. WHCA is seeking entries for the following awards:Merriman Smith Award, which recognizes presidential news coverage under deadline pressure in print and broadcast categories. February 23, 1955: Female journalists, barred from the ballroom to cover luncheon speakers, are permitted to work from the balcony. Arnaud de Borchgrave: Lovely Fun, Lovely Man
Arnaud de Borchgrave, who streaked into the journalistic firmament at the end of World War II, died Sunday. He was 88, and had been a National Press Club member since 2003. Born a Belgian count with a Jewish mother, a Rothschild, de Borchgrave thanked Britain's Royal Navy for saving his family by serving as an underage seaman during the war. The family had sailed, he told me, from Marseilles in a tramp steamer, but were betrayed by the captain -- who set off not for freedom, but for a Nazi-controlled port.
