Club to offer flu shots Oct. 15
The Club once again will offer flu shots this fall. The shots will be administered by INOVA Healthsource in the Bloomberg Room from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Women screenwriters featured at free event Sept. 17
Club member Janice Law invites Club members to a free panel featuring Monica Lee Bellais, Jane Barbara, Dr. Sabrina McCormick and Maureen Stack Sappey. Books & Brunch returns to its regular monthly meetings at noon Saturday, Sept. 20, in the Fourth Estate restaurant to discuss “American Lion: Andrew Jackson in the White House” by Jon Meacham. The group meets on the third Saturday of each month. Meacham’s book helps put Washington’s current partisan rancor in context with the story of Jackson’s efforts to shut down the Second National Bank of the U.S. and his battles against southerners who held states had the right to nullify federal laws, such as a tariff that aided northern manufacturers but harmed southern planters. Deadline looms for Club's annual crabfest buffet
Today is the deadline for reserving a space at the Club's annual crabfest buffet. The crabs, shredded chicken tacos and barbecue sandwiches, cauliflower macaroni and cheese, baked tricolor beans, Mediterranean green salad and other goodies will be served beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18, in the Reliable Source. For dessert, there is an ice cream sundae bar that includes hot fudge and strawberry toppings, as well as nuts and sprinkles. Discount for NPC members on American Songwriters class with John Eaton
John Eaton, a renowned musician, humorist and long-time friend of the National Press Club, will teach his American Songwriters series at the Friendship Heights Village Center in October. Classes will be held on Wednesdays from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. from Oct. 15 through Nov. 5. Composers studied include Jerome Kern, Cole Porter and Harold Arlen. Every class will include a short concert by Eaton. He has taught these classes at the Smithsonian and Wolf Trap for more than a dozen years and now he will bring them to the suburbs. Test your knowledge tonight when Pub Quiz returns to the Truman Lounge at 7 p.m. The evening of trivia food, drinks and prizes resumes at 7 p.m. Pub Quiz is sponsored by the Club's Events Committee. Member invites NPC members to mid-November study trip to Turkey; signups due Sept. 18
National Press Club Member Mehmet Saracoglu invites National Press Club members, both journalists and communicators, to Rumi Forum`s upcoming study trip to Turkey, Nov. 14-23. To participate in the trip, NPC members will need to purchase their own airfare to and from Turkey and provide $500 for domestic flights within Turkey. The Rumi Forum, a Washington-based intercultural dialogue organization and sponsor of the trip, will cover all other expenses including accommodations, ground transportation and meals.
