Club softball team invites interested players to preseason happy hour April 2
Interested in playing for the National Press Club softball team? If so, please join the team at a preseason happy hour on Thursday, April 2, starting at 5:30 p.m. in the Club's Games room. Coach John Domen and team members will be there to answer questions. The Club plays in the Metropolitan Media League, and there is no cost to be on the team. Washington Post Editorial Cartoonist Tom Toles to headline Spring Hoot May 1
Tom Toles, editorial cartoonist for The Washington Post, will display both his musical and cartooning skills at the Silver Owls Spring Hoot on Friday, May 1, at the National Press Club. Toles, who won a 1990 Pulitzer Prize for his editorial cartoons and has been at the Post since 2002, is also the leader of a band known as the "Suspicious Package." Toles will first lead his band at the Hoot and then relate how he comes up with an idea and then draws his award-winning cartoons. A memorial gathering to celebrate the life of member John Oravec will be held at noon on Friday, April 10, the in the Truman Lounge of the Reliable Source restaurant. John, a longtime Club member, was active as an editor of the AFL-CIO Bulletin. He was an avid poker player, golfer and a teetotaler!

Press freedom programs move to NPC Journalism Institute
Press freedom programs will be conducted under the auspices of the National Press Club Journalism Institute, clearing the way for growth in the funding and number of events held around protecting 1st Amendment rights. Foundations and other grant-making organizations will be able to finance press-freedom programs because the National Press Club's affiliate, the Journalism Institute, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.
