Martin Luther King Jr. addressed Club, July 19, 1962
Did you know Martin Luther King Jr. spoke at the National Press Club on July 19, 1962? He discussed non-violent resistance and freedom. You can read a draft of his speech here. Interestingly, the Club's president worried about inaccuracies in the transcript of the speech due to a "not-too-clear" recording. He wrote King asking him to read over the transcript and fill in the blanks. You can read the correspondence here.

This Week In National Press Club History January 17, 1969: President Lyndon B. Johnson gives a farewell news conference at the National Press Club shortly before leaving office, saying that he thought ”it would not be right for me to leave Washington without coming here to my old club that I have been visiting since [the thirties].” He signed the guest register for the last time, but that page of the register disappeared even before he had left the Club. National Press Club President Mark Hamrick will end an extraordinary term Jan. 20 when he hands the gavel to President-elect Theresa Werner at the General Membership Meeting. $5,000 prize for top political reporting; deadline Jan. 14
Entries for the $5,000 Toner Prize for Excellence in Political Reporting 2011 are now being accepted by the S. I. Newhouse School of Public Communications at Syracuse University. The Toner Prize recognizes outstanding political reporting in a tribute to Robin Toner, the late national political correspondent for The New York Times and a summa cum laude graduate of Syracuse University with dual degrees in journalism and political science. Silimeo’s career path winds through broadcasting, government to public relations
National Press Club communicator member Debra Silimeo, recently named executive vice president of the public relations firm Hager Sharp, showed the journalistic and economic interests that would inspire her career as a fifth grader. She published a newspaper covering her row-house neighborhood in the Philadelphia area and sold it for two or three cents. Hometown high school recognizes Press Club's Priebe
National Press Club member Louis Victor Priebe, although a Washington resident since 1970, is clearly a man who still loves his hometown of Enid, Oklahoma. Now the community he was raised in is letting him know that the feeling is mutual. Priebe, the recipient of the 2011 Berny Krug Award, has recently received Enid High School’s ``Pride of the Plainsman Award," an honor given to alumni and benefactors who have excelled in their individual career fields.
