Silver Owls schedule 2012 "hoots" for April 26 and October 27
Mark your calendars now: The Council of Wisest Owls, the "governing" body for the Silver Owls, the organization of National Press Club members who have belonged to the organization for 25 or more years, has selected Thursday, April 26, and Saturday, October 27 for the group's two 2012 "hoots." The April 26 event, which will honor former presidents of the National Press Club and the former Washington Press Club, will begin with a 6:30 p.m. reception followed by a 7:30 p.m. dinner and program in the Ballroom. Wednesday, Feb. 29, 2012, is the last Wednesday of the month and heralds a popular feature in the 13th floor Fourth Estate Restaurant, Lobster Night. Sadie Hawkins’ celebrations have their root in the iconic American folk comic, Al Capp's Li'l Abner. FotoDC founder to describe photo events at noon, March 1
Theodore Adamstein, founder and executive director of FotoDC and FotoWeek DC, will describe this year's photo competitions, activities, and events at a luncheon meeting of the NPC Photography Committee at noon, Thursday, March 1, in the McClendon Room. FotoDC's many events include the National Cherry Blossom Festival photo contest, which runs through April 15. Winners will receive cash prizes and publicity. March 1, 1909: The Club moves to the second and third floors of historic Rhodes Tavern at 15th and F Streets NW and is there until 1914. Several years ago, members of the Club, including past president John Cosgrove, were present at the dedication of a decorated fire and police callbox at the corner, noting that the now demolished Tavern was the second home of the National Press Club. National Press Club member Carol Morgan is displaying her sculpture,"Polish lady" in the student show at the Art League Gallery at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Va. until March 4.
