Silver Owls' April 26 hoot to feature John Eaton
John Eaton, the great jazz pianist and one of the legendary interpreters of American popular music, will entertain at the April 26 Silver Owls "hoot" in the Ballroom. Eaton; who regularly performs and lectures at such venues as the Smithsonian Institution's Performing Arts jazz series, the Kool Jazz Festival, and Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts; is an old friend of the Silver Owls, the organization of National Press Club members who have belonged to the organization for 25 or more years. Feast at the Irish Buffet, hear Irish music Friday, March 16 (no Taco Night)
The traditional St. Patrick’s Night Buffet and celebration will be 5:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, March 16, in the Reliable Source Restaurant. The celebration will feature traditional Irish favorites and music by guitarist player Matt Palombo. Feast on corned beef, lamb stew, salmon fillets, Irish whiskey bread and shamrock cupcakes, plus a variety of additional dishes. The Buffet is $17 per person plus beverage, tax and gratuity. As is usual on buffet nights, items on the menu will not be available. Taco Night will also not be available.

Liz Spayd, managing editor of The Washington Post and new member of the Press Club, will meet members for the newest edition of 'Media on Tap' on Friday March 9, at 7 p.m. in the McClendon Room. Calling softball players for coed NPC team
The division winning National Press Club softball team is getting ready for another season of play in the Metropolitan Media Softball League. This league features media entities in print and broadcast based around the DC area. All club members are welcome to join the team in this coed league. Games are played Saturday mornings in the Wheaton area of Montgomery County. The season begins after Easter and will wrap up in July. Anyone interested should email John Domen at [email protected].

"Winnie" McLendon, newspaperwoman, magazine writer, author and literary agent, died March 1
Winzola "Winnie" Poole McLendon, a veteran newspaperwoman, magazine writer, author and literary agent, died March 1 at her home in Washington, D.C. Her family did not divulge her age. McLendon was a 61-year member of the National Press Club and its predecessor organization, the Women's National Press Club/Washington Press Club. A Golden Owl member of the NPC, in retirement she served on the Travel Committee and led several overseas trips for the Club. She often was accompanied by her husband of 58 years, retired Navy Capt. Did you know that the Club reserves two front tables for members and their guests to every speaker’s luncheon? We want to provide our members with the opportunity to be close to our speakers. The seats at these tables are on a first come, first serve basis. Come early to get one, but other tables are available if they fill. The cost of each luncheon is $19 for National Press Club members and $30 for each guest. The National Press Club Journalism Institute and the Regional Reporters Association (RRA) will hold the next in a yearlong series of programs for reporters covering the 2012 campaign with a refresher course in Microsoft Excel.
