Hamrick to Launch 'Dinner with the President' Series
Later this month, National Press Club President Mark Hamrick will begin a series of meetings with members titled "Dinner with the President." The first one, with a cross-section of members selected and invited by the Membership Department, will be in the McClendon Room of The Reliable Source. The program builds on an effort begun by then-NPC President Jerry Zremski, who hosted lunches with members to gather their thoughts and suggestions about Club operations and activities. Dinner & a Movie: Usher in the Chinese New Year with Raise the Red Lantern
Raise the Red Lantern will be shown in honor of Chinese New Year at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, in the McClendon Room during Dinner and a Movie Night. Raise the Red Lantern is an adaption by Ni Zhen of the 1990 novel Wives and Concubines by Su Tong. Set in the 1920s, the film tells the story of a young woman who becomes one of the concubines of a wealthy man during the Warlord Era. It is noted for its opulent visuals and sumptuous use of colours. Some film critics have interpreted the film as a veiled allegory against authoritarianism. Inspiration On Demand: Visit the NPC's Friedheim Library
Book of Note: Member Connie Lawn's updated autobiography You Wake Me Each Morning is available to borrow from the Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library at the National Press Club. Lawn launched the book at the Club in April "with many timely stories and lessons to inspire all journalists, especially in this new age." Lawn began covering the White House and the world in 1968. In 2006, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Press Club of New Zealand.
