Members Approve Constitution, Bylaws Changes
National Press Club members at the Oct. 8 membership committee meeting approved unanimously by voice vote membership category changes, including renaming the categories. The former Active category members are now Journalist members, and former Affiliate and Associate members are now Communicators. The membership changes streamline the number of main membership categories to two from 12 and the number of sub-categories to 20 from 49. Club Membership Meets Amid Strong Performance
More than 60 NPC members attended the autumn membership meeting Oct. 8, the first available via a live webcast, and heard that the Club is on target to achieve profits of at least $1.4 million by the end of the year. Treasurer Keith Hill also reported that as of Sept. 1, the Club had $1.2 million in cash and reserves, $200,000 more than had been mandated by the Board of Governors. Long term, the Club’s auditors have said the reserves should reach $3 million, the equivalent of approximately three months’ operating expenses. Books & Brunch Meets at Noon, Oct. 16
The NPC’s Books & Brunch group will discuss “The First Tycoon: The Epic Life of Cornelius Vanderbilt” by T. J. Stiles, at noon on Saturday, Oct. 16, in the Fourth Estate Restaurant. Free parking is available at the PMI garage on G Street between 13th and 14th streets for those who attend and buy a meal. Anyone who wants to park free needs to bring his or her PMI ticket to the Fourth Estate to be stamped. At the end of the discussion, the group will select a non-fiction book for the Dec. 18 meeting. C-SPAN Retrospective at Oct. 21 Silver Owl Hoot
Thanks to C-SPAN, National Press Club luncheons have garnered a huge nationwide audience for the past 30 years. The Club's long-time members, Silver Owls, will celebrate the anniversary of the first C-SPAN telecast at the Fall Hoot dinner Thursday, Oct. 21, with a reception starting at 6:30 p.m. The event is open to all Club members and guests. Communications Committee to Discuss Media Relations, Noon, Oct. 21
Paul Rodriguez of Burson-Marsteller will lead a discussion on best practices in media relations and how to be a good source for reporters at noon, Thursday, Oct. 21, on the mezzanine. Rodriguez is managing director at the Washington office of the global public relations firm, where he provides strategic counsel for clients on their communication campaigns. Wine Tasting Nets Cash for Library
About 200 people attended Stomp the Grapes to sample wines, spirits and beers Friday, Oct. 1, and helped raise about $3,000 for the operations of the Club's non-profit arm, the Eric Friedheim National Journalism Library. "I can't think of a more fun way to raise money for the Library," said organizer and former NPC President Donna Leinwand. "Everyone had a terrific time sampling the wide variety of wines."
