Book Fair a Success; 11 Raffle Prizes Unclaimed
The 33rd annual Book Fair & Authors Night is history, and hundreds of happy book buyers were seen carrying out bags full of novels, cookbooks, children's books, political and current affairs volumes and histories as they left the Club. "This event has become a mainstay for the club and the community it serves,' said Club President Alan Bjerga, who also served as the raffle master at this year's event. Bjerga raffled off more than a dozen prizes donated by sponsors such as Amtrak, Wegmans, River Creek Club, the National Portrait Gallery and Bjerga. There are still 11 unclaimed prizes.…

Pub Quiz will be at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 11, in the Truman Lounge. The Club's monthly team trivia evening is filled with good times, good food and drinks, and round prizes. Memorial 1 pm Nov. 13 for Charles McDowell
A memorial service for Charles Rice McDowell Jr., a Fourth Estate Award winner and longtime Club member, will be at the Club at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13. He died Nov. 5 at his home in Virginia Beach, Va., of complications from a stroke. He was 84. A political columnist who spent his entire 49-year career at the Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch, Mr. McDowell also was a panelist of PBS’s Washington Week in Review, an inductee into the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame and a narrator of Ken Burns’ “Civil War” documentary. Nomination Deadline Nov. 10 for Club Elections
The deadline for filing nominating petitions for Club officers and the Board of Governors is close of business Wednesday, Nov. 10. The election is Friday, Dec. 10. The nominating petitions for president must be signed by at least 25 Journalist members; at least 15 Journalist members must sign petitions for candidates for vice president, secretary, treasurer and membership secretary and the two Board of Governors' positions elected by Journalist members, and at least 15 Communicator members for the one Governor position elected by those in the Communicator membership category. House Historian Discusses Institutional History, 6:30 pm Nov. 16
Fred W. Beuttler, historian of the House of Representatives, will discuss the preservation of institutional history at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 16, in the Bloomberg classroom adjacent to the Library. The meeting of the History and Heritage Committee is open to all; there is no charge for attendance. Beuttler's office organizes and maintains a history of the House by collecting documents and artifacts and by conducting oral history interviews of members of the House. Welcome Karoun Demirjian to the National Press Club
The Harvard-and-Tufts-educated journalist Karoun Demirjian works for the Las Vegas Sun in DC. She's been working regularly as journalist since 2007, with stints at the Chicago Tribune, Congressional Quarterly and most recently reporting for AP from Israel, the West Bank and Gaza strip. She got her start with internships during graduate school at Tufts.
