New house rule limits payment delays
When using National Press Club facilities, Club members have two choices: Pay in cash or charge purchases to a house account. In the past, members have been considered “current” as long as the balance in their house account has not exceeded $250. Some members have “gamed the system,” maintaining a constant balance of $249, while most members pay their charges every month. Club student member elected GW student body executive vice president
National Press Club student member Ted Costigan was elected executive vice president of the student body at the George Washington University last week. Costigan ran against four other candidates, garnering more than 53 percent of the vote in a run off election. Club member Dana Wright advised Costigan’s campaign and helped craft a winning message concerning the elimination of student fees and increased funding for university libraries.

The life and times of Gene Kramer, a correspondent for The Associated Press for 47 years and a member of the National Press Club since 1994, will be remembered at a get-together in the McClendon Room at 6pm Friday, April 1. Former NPC member Arnold Smith, head of PR company, dies
Arnold Smith, a former NPC member, died March 24, in Washington. He was 81. Smith held a variety of posts over his long career, and for more than 30 years he headed Smith & Associates, a public relations company with domestic and foreign clients. Arnold will be buried in a graveside cemetery on Thursday, March 31, at 10:15 a.m. in the Kesher Israel Congregation section of the National Capital Hebrew Cemetery, which is located on land in southeast Washington and Capital Heights, Maryland. Annual Membership Meeting Set for Jan. 21
The annual membership meeting of the National Press Club will be at noon Friday, Jan. 21, when Mark Hamrick will take office as the Club's 104th president. NPC Member's 100th Book is Published
Member Don Philpott, editor of International Homeland Security, has published his 100th book. The two-volume Guide to Federal Terms and Acronyms is published by Rowman and Littlefield. The guide is a 1,200-page glossary of the most common key definitions used by the federal departments and agencies. It is one of four books that Philpott has had published this month; the others are Special Needs Families in the Military, Combat-Related Traumatic Brain Injury and PTSD (part of the Military Life series), and The Telework Manager's Toolkit.
