This year the National Press Club will hold its annual picnic on Sunday, Oct. 2 at Rock Creek Park, Lot 6, from noon to 4 p.m. There will be a "Fall/Harvest Theme" to accompany the picnic. Journalist, author Odom Fanning, long-time NPC member, dies
Odom Olin Fanning, Washington-based science writer, died on May 8, 2011, of pneumonia and heart failure. He was 90 years old. Over a long career, Mr. Fanning advocated for civil rights in the South, wrote for the federal government on public health, environmental policy, and marine sciences, and reported on public health, medical, marine science, and environmental protection issues. Mr. Fanning was previously a science reporter for the Atlanta Journal and the first public information officer for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. First "Meet the Press Club" event a "smashing success"
About 50 National Press Club members gathered Wednesday evening for the debut "Meet the Press Club" event at the Reliable Source. The informal mixer brought together Journalist and Communicator members, some from as far away as Japan and South Korea. Additionally, a visiting officer from New Zealand's National Press Club attended. The idea for the gathering was suggested at a recent "Dinner with the President", which was a discussion among members providing feedback and suggestions. Club softball team improves to 7-1 after doubleheader win
The National Press Club softball team knocked off WRC (Channel 4) and Albritton (Channels 7 and 8) 17-5 and 11-10 over the weekend. The winning rally to beat Albritton started with two-outs and nobody on in the final inning when the Club trailed by two. Ted Costigan and Sarahanne Driggs were both perfect at the plate in both games of the double header. The Club is now 7-1 at the halfway point this season, which takes this weekend off for Memorial Day.

Cartoonist Bill Rechin dies
Bill Rechin, a syndicated cartoonist and member of the National Press Club, died Saturday, May 21, of complications from esophageal cancer. He was 80. For many years, Rechin drew the "Crock" and "Out of Bounds" comic strips for King Features Syndicate. During the renovation of the Press Club in 1983, he boosted the morale of the membership by drawing cartoons lampooning the Club's distress. His work hung in the Reliable Source for many years, and the Club made him an honorary member for his service. Staying creative in a tight photo market, noon May 25
Jim Lo Scalzo, a veteran professional photojournalist, will discuss ways to stay creative in an increasingly competitive photo market at a lunch meeting of the National Press Club Photography Committee at noon Wednesday, May 25, in the McClendon Room.
