The King's Speech featured at Dinner and a Movie Night, June 16
The next Dinner and a Movie Night will feature the Academy-Award winning "The King's Speech" at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 16. Starring Colin Firth, Geoffrey Rush and Helen Bonham Carter, the film tells the story of the unexpected ascension to the throne of King George VI of Britain and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch communicate with his country. Volunteers needed for NPC picnic; Ants will be rejected
The National Press Club Annual Picnic will be held on Sunday, October 2 at Rock Creek Park. The Events Committee is seeking volunteers to help plan this family-friendly event. NPC's Big Blue Softball wins a "nail-biter" over National Journal
The National Press Club Big Blue softball team is now 8-2 after splitting a doubleheader against the Washington Post and National Journal. The first game went to the Post 15-7 despite the impressive pitching debut of Mike Diegel and three impressive catches by Staci Maiers in right-center field in her first appearance of the season. Ken Giglio and Clay Kaufman each had 3-run homers. In the second game, NPC spotted Nat Journal a 10-0 lead after 2 ½ innings, before scoring 7 runs in the bottom of the 3rd. Former Club secretary Stolberg of E.W. Scripps dies
David Stolberg, who was secretary of the Club while he served as managing editor of the old Washington Daily News from 1968 to 1975, died in Southingham, Conn., May 24. He was 83. Stolberg retired from the E.W. Scripps Co. in 1990 after 38 years in the news division that culminated in the post of assistant general editorial manager that allowed him to oversee news quality for the entire company. His father, mother and stepfather had newspaper careers, as did his daughter, Mary. Beginning his career as a reporter and city editor for the Arlington, Va., Daily, Stolberg joined an experimental…

Travel to Manassas Battlefield June 18; Space is limited, RSVP ASAP
The National Press Club’s annual Civil War battlefield trip will be to nearby Manassas National Battlefield Park on Saturday, June 18. The visit is being made in connection with the sesquicentennial of the First Battle of Manassas on July 21, 1861. Civil War expert Henry Elliott of the National Park Service will explain how the one-day engagement turned into a rout, with fleeing citizens joining retreating Union soldiers on the jammed road back to Washington.
