This Week In National Press Club History July 29, 1996: Dr. Jack Kevorkian gives a fiery speech in defense of doctor-assisted suicide. July 30, 1982: Prime Minister of India Indira Gandhi makes her third appearance at a National Press Club luncheon. Her father, Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister after the country’s independence, begins the family dynasty’s many visits to the Club, in 1956 and 1961. Club member Clift wins Buchwald Award for book about husband's final days
National Press Club member Eleanor Clift has been selected as this year’s Art Buchwald Award recipient by The Washington Home & Community Hospices for her book "Two Weeks of Life." Clift wrote about her husband’s final days. The award will be presented at a fundraising gala on Friday, Oct. 21. Mark Shields, a nationally known columnist and longtime National Press Club member, will “roast” Jim Lehrer at the Oct. 28 Fourth Estate award dinner. Shields has provided weekly political analysis and commentary on national campaigns for PBS’ award-winning "The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer" since 1988. New Pulitzer Prize-winning photo added to Club walls
The National Press Club has added another Pulitzer Prize-winning photo to its walls. The photo was taken and donated by Mary Chind, a staff photographer at The Des Moines Register, who won the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Breaking News Photography. The image depicts the heart-stopping moment when Jason Oglesbee, a construction worker dangling from a crane in a makeshift harness, saved Patricia Ralph-Neely from the foaming water beneath a dam in the Des Moines river in June 2009. Idaho media tour features manufacturers adapting to new economy
The State of Idaho is offering a media tour, Sept. 11-15, to show how manufacturers are adapting to a new economy and succeeding in a changing world. The tour will feature: Competitive boat manufacturers that have created a consortium that is now marketing their region as “the jet boat capital of the world.” The Coeur d’Alene Tribe that has launched several innovative businesses to create a vibrant economic region in northern Idaho. The National Press Club announces the return of an automated phone-in service that provides a listing of official Club events for the week. Time capsule sealed in 1985, holds Club video for future civilizations
This Week In National Press Club History July 19, 1985: In a ceremony conducted by National Press Club and Building officials, mementos reflecting slices of journalistic history are sealed in two time capsules and placed behind the cornerstones of the National Press Building. Contents include a video documentary created for the time capsules by Club member Patrick McGrath. One box holds artifacts from the 1926 capsule, inadvertently opened in 1967 by workers during a renovation project; the other include mementos portraying the building, the Club and Washington journalism since 1926.
