Events Committee Seeks Historian for NPC Lincoln Bicentennial Program
For a program on Abraham Lincoln, God, and Washington media scheduled for Monday, Sept. 20, the Events Committee is searching for someone who can speak for 10 to 15 minutes about the relationship between the Lincolns and the press. Free Computer Space Gets Wide Use
When Jamie Bowen’s employer, the Diplomatic Courier, closed its office but kept its staff, he had a choice of working at home or in the Club’s 14th floor work space for members. It was an easy decision. “It’s almost like a newsroom,” says Bowen. NPC member seeking musicians for museum opening
NPC member Janice Law is seeking a local music group or musician who could play music at the opening of the American Women Writers National Museum. Law, who founded the museum, will host the museum's grand opening on Monday, Feb. 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at a storefront a few blocks from NPC. A more formal invitation to Club members will be issued in the coming weeks. Anyone with suggestions should contact Law at [email protected]. Jan. 2, 1980: Fledging cable network C-Span covers its first NPC luncheon, which featured Paul Volcker, Chairman of the Federal Reserve. Twenty-two years later, in 2002, C-Span founder Brian Lamb receives the Club’s Fourth Estate Award for his lifetime of contributions to journalism. Jan. 6, 1926: The Ebbitt Hotel is demolished to make way for the new National Press Building. The hotel’s famous bar is salvaged and today stands in the Old Ebbitt Grill, just up the street. Queen Elizabeth II has appointed NPC member Connie Lawn an honorary officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for her contributions to U.S.- New Zealand relations. New Year's resolution: Rent locker, get fit
The NPC Gym is now offering a limited number of lockers for members to rent in both the men's and women’s bathroom. Each full-sized locker rents for $50 for a three-month period. The rental fee must be paid in full before locker can be rented. All lockers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Members who rent a locker will be required to sign a terms of use agreement. Members will continue to have free daily use of lockers.
