A memorial service for longtime Washington journalist Robert D.G. Lewis, former chairman of the National Press Club's Board of Governors and a former national president of the Society of Professional Journalists, will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 13 at the Club. Lewis, 80, died July 10 at the Inova Fairfax Heart and Vascular Institute in Northern Virginia. He was 80 and suffered from pulmonary fibrosis. Renovations Begin July 30 for Reliable Source, 13th Floor Restrooms
Renovations of the Reliable Source kitchen and the bathrooms on the 13th floor will begin in both areas after the close of business on Friday, July 30, and are scheduled to be completed by Labor Day. What will change in the Reliable Source? The Reliable Source kitchen project will involve the demolition and rebuilding of the cooking and dishwashing space. It will modernize the kitchen, which has not been renovated since 1984, and will allow the addition of pizza and panini, for example, to the menu. State Department Spokesman P.J. Crowley met with Young Members July 13 for a discussion on geopolitics and the inner-workings of the Obama administration’s foreign policy shop. Crowley walked YMs through an average day at the State Department, describing how the public affairs office develops press guidance and discusses the issues of the day, as well as how he prepares to meet the press. Silver Owl Barrett McGurn Dies
Barrett McGurn, 95, a Club member since 1975, died July 2 in Bethesda. He was a foreign correspondent and press secretary, including serving as the Supreme Court's first spokesman (1973 to 1982). After graduating from college, Mr. McGurn worked for the New York Herald Tribune and was an Army journalist during World War II for Yank magazine. After the war, he became the Herald Tribune's bureau chief in Rome and Paris and covered the 1956 Hungarian Revolution, the Washington Post reported.
