Silver Owl Quentin R. Bates dies at 93
The National Press Club has belatedly learned of the death of Quentin R. Bates of Bethesda, Md., a Silver Owl and 37-year member. Bates passed away April 25 at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda after suffering from what his family described as "multiple health problems." Bates spent 28 years in the U.S. Foreign Service and subsequently, after its formation in 1956, in the Agricultural Foreign Service, including postings in Winnipeg, Ottawa, Paris, Manila, Bogota, Buenos Aires and Brussels. August 15, 1935: National Press Club member and beloved American humorist Will Rogers dies in a plane crash after taking off from Barrow, Alaska with internationally famous test pilot Wiley Post. He had just sent his daily telegram to newspapers, skewering the government’s effort to grow vegetables near the Arctic Circle, noting “there is a lot of difference between pioneering for gold and pioneering for spinach.” For the dedication of the Will Rogers Memorial several year later in Claremore, Oklahoma, President Franklin D. Magicians meet third Wednesdays in the McClendon room
Does magic fascinate you? Did you used to dabble with magic tricks but haven’t dusted them off in years? Do you perform for friends and family but would like to learn more? The Larry West Assembly 23 of the Society of America Magicians meets the third Wednesday of every month (next meeting Aug. 15) at 8 p.m. in the McClendon Room. Last call for Members' Exhibit photos
Photos are due by Friday, Aug. 17, for the 13th Annual NPC Members' Photography Exhibition. Submit entries in the Membership Office. Each member may submit up to four photos. Price departs with a smile; fete celebrates 45-year Club career
The First Amendment Lounge erupted in cheers and clapping when Andrew Price walked in on Friday, Aug. 3, for his retirement party. Appearing relaxed in a short-sleeved purple plaid shirt, gray slacks and holding his cap in hand, he flashed the familiar endearing smile. Many things have changed at the National Press Club since 1967, when Price started working here, said Art Wiese, Club president in 1979. “A cup of coffee cost 25¢ and today it’s $2.55," Wiese said. Member's short film to screen at B.B.King Museum
True Delta, a blues-inspired short film based on an original concept by CBS News writer/reporter and Club Member Erickson Blakney will be shown at the B.B. King Museum in Indianola, Miss., on Aug. 10. The film explores the colorful world of Mississippi Delta Blues and its impact on the cultural, economic and religious life of the region.

Wexler publishes first book on journalism in crisis
National Press Club Member Celia Wexler has published her first book, "Out of the News: Former Journalists Discuss a Profession in Crisis." The book has many NPC ties, including a mention of the Reliable Source, where she spent many hours interviewing her subjects, Wexler said. The 11 journalists profiled, who worked at news organizations including The Washington Post, New York Times and CNN, "have led rich lives and have much to say about journalism, its past, present and future," Wexler said.
