Creation of new "Platinum Owl" status to be announced at Oct. 27 Silver Owl Hoot
Preliminary plans for creating a new, third, and even more senior species of wise birds, those who have been loyal members of the National Press Club for 60 or more consecutive years, will be announced at the upcoming Owls' hoot at noon on Saturday, Oct. 27. The new species will be called Platinum Owls, even longer roosted at the Club than the original two species -- the Silver Owls (25 or more years of unbroken membership) and the Golden Owls (50 or more years). Honored CIA official and NPC member Joe L. Zaring dies Joe L. Zaring, 91, a recipient of one of the intelligence community's highest honors and a veteran National Press Club member, died Sept. 17 at Washington's Sibley Hospital. Zaring, 91, lived in Washington, D.C. and had been an NPC member for 13 years. He joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1951 and spent 30 years there, working in the Western European division of the agency's Directorate of Intelligence. Hughes resigns NPC Board seat effective Jan. 17, opening another seat for election
NPC Board Chair John Hughes, has resigned from the Board of Governors, effective Jan. 17, 2013, to seek election as Club treasurer. Hughes' resignation opens a journalist seat on the board for the remaining year of Hughes' three-year term. Interested journalist candidates for the one-year term may circulate nominating petitions until Oct. 26. The Silver Owls will celebrate the "golden ages" of American presidential politics and of American swing music at their upcoming Hoot at the National Press Club at noon Saturday, Oct. 27. The Hoot, 10 days before the national election, will salute the lighter side of American politics. A highlight will be a presentation on the activities of U.S. presidents and presidential candidates at the Club throughout its 104-year history.
