Club President Michael Freedman remembers a longtime member, CBS News leader William J. Small: 'Setting standards and breaking barriers that we take for granted today'
Once a great while, a person comes along who changes lives. And then there are those who change the world. In the world of journalism such a man was Bill Small, who passed away Sunday, May 24, at the age of 93. In short, Mr. Small, as he was known to all professionally, led the vaunted team that set the standard for television news coverage during the most formative years of the medium in the nation’s capital. From 1962 to 1974, an era that spanned the Kennedy administration, the war in Vietnam and Watergate—the Walter Cronkite era of television news—Bill Small served as Washington Bureau…

Friendly competition on the diamond isn't the same on Zoom
While many of the National Press Club's routine activities have been adjusted to a virtual format, one seasonal activity just can't make that transition: the Club's softball team. Montgomery County has shut down its team recreational activities to control the spread of COVID-19, including all sports leagues. In a normal softball season in the Metropolitan Media Softball League, Memorial Day weekend would have been a week off from weekly Saturday doubleheaders that started in mid-April before the final push to playoffs. A cookie at a 2018 National Press Club luncheon at which Joe Torre was a…

The following spinach pie is a variation on that theme, but takes the concept to a new level by veiling the spinach mixture in a crusty, flaky phyllo crust. Dill plays a major flavor role in this orchestration, so it always tastes like spring. A Greek landlord in Tucson, Arizona, insisted that I would learn more about cooking from her than during my internship at Canyon Ranch Resort. She dissed the approach to…

Not planning to grill meat this holiday weekend? Try this vegan moussaka recipe
With travails at meat packing plants in the news, one might envy the vegan who is divorced from all such considerations. The following recipe is a vegan casserole and unusual, filling and unique due to North African spices rather than the expected Greek oregano slant. There are terrific Greek Moussaka recipes that generally incorporate eggplant and ground beef or lamb, but this is an unrelated variation on a theme. The nuts are a secret but requisite ingredient because texture, texture, texture is something often lacking in bean dishes. The chickpeas are an optional add-in, but do add another…

National Press Club board member Del Wilber will host a virtual conversation Wednesday, June 3, with Barton Gellman about his new book, "Dark Mirror: Edward Snowden and the American Surveillance State," which Library Journal called "a well-documented account on the far-reaching impact of U.S. domestic surveillance and the resulting intrusions of privacy; highly recommended both for general readers and those with an interest in national security." The conversation begins at 8:30 p.m. In 2013, Gellman helped break the news of Edward Snowden's disclosures of the National Security Agency's…
