Burr Takes Gavel from Hughes at Friday, Jan. 15 Noon General Membership Meeting
Join us on Friday, Jan. 15 when National Press Club President John Hughes hands the gavel to President-elect Tommy Burr at a General Membership Meeting. The meeting will begin at noon with a buffet lunch in the conference rooms, along the hallway to the Fourth Estate restaurant. Reliable Source Bartender Richard McClary to Retire Thursday
Richard McClary, the happy hour, dinner and late night bartender at the National Press Club's Reliable Source bar, is hanging up his vest and retiring on Thursday night after 49 years of service to the Club. "I started as a barback and got on-the-job training," "Richie" said. In 1967, when he started, the bar was where the Library is and vice versa. McClary plans to stay in the Washington area, but he has already been told at home, "I can no longer spend every day at a bar with my friends." NPC Book Group to discuss novel about slavery, women’s rights
The National Press Club's Books & Brunch group will discuss “The Invention of Wings” by Sue Monk Kidd at noon on Saturday, Jan 23, in the Fourth Estate Restaurant. The novel is a fictionalized history of Sarah Grimke (1792-1873) and her sister Angelina (1805-1879), who were pioneering advocates in both the abolitionist and women’s rights movements. Angelina was the youngest of the 14 Grimke children (six died as infants) who grew up as members of Charleston’s slave-owning elite. National Symphony Orchestra to make beautiful music at the Club
Members of the National Symphony Orchestra will perform in the Holeman Lounge beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 7.
