October 6, 1965: President Lyndon Johnson makes a surprise appearance at a National Press Club luncheon honoring American cartoonists, joining Milton Caniff (“Steve Canyon” and “Terry and the Pirates”) at the head table with other notables of that art form. He reportedly comments that one politician who was offended by his caricature said he couldn’t find the artist, so he hung the picture instead. Sign up for study trip to Turkey by Thursday, Oct. 8
National Press Club member Mehmet Saracoglu invites Club members -- journalists and communicators -- to Rumi Forum`s upcoming annual study trip to Turkey. The trip -- from Nov. 6 to Nov. 15 -- will focus on media and press freedom, democracy and human rights in Turkey and the wider region, as well as social, economic, cultural, security and political issues. The application form is due by Oct. 8. The Rumi Forum has been organizing trips to Turkey since 2005 as a way to inform Club members about the country and region. Broadcast Committee gets a pre-game tour of MASN booth
The first Broadcast Committee trip to a baseball game opened with a pre-game tour of the Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) broadcast booth at Nationals Park on Saturday, Sept. 26, on a picture perfect day. Nats play-by-play host Bob Carpenter and color analyst F.P. Santangelo kindly took a break to show Club members around the booth including showing off their personal library of game stats collected over the years. Club decides to sell Rockwell painting due to high valuation, insurance costs
A sharply rising valuation and related insurance costs led to a unanimous decision by the boards of the National Press Club and the NPC Journalism Institute to sell the Club's Norman Rockwell painting, "Norman Rockwell Visits a Country Editor," National Press Club President John Hughes said at the Club's general membership meeting on Oct. 2. In an earlier email and at the meeting, Hughes said that the appraised value of the painting had risen exponentially recently to between $10 and $15 million. Insurance and adequate security costs for such an art work would run in "six figures," he said.…

Nominations open for Club officer, board elections
Nominations for this year's annual National Press Club elections for officers and board members are open and will run through Oct. 30. Candidates will place their nominating petitions on the tables outside the president's office for members to sign. (If you're facing the Reliable Source, the president's office is to the right). The nomination period will be followed by candidate vetting. Members will be able to vote online, by absentee ballot and in person. Members who prefer to vote in person will cast their ballots on Friday, Dec. 11. The election results will be announced that evening.

Club member's operatic medley to be performed in Virginia this month
Club member Anthony Gallo has co-written two musicals and excerpts of both will be performed at the The program, "Medley," draws from "Lincoln and God" and "Vandergrift." Both plays are based on the stage dramas of the same names. Medley will be performed at a number of Washington venues, including the Kennedy Center in September.
