Mike Marlow, broadcast journalist, producer inspired "White House Chronicle," 89
Michael J. "Mike" Marlow, a radio and television announcer and producer and 62-year member of the National Press Club, died May 28 at his home in Ashburn, Va. He was 89. Mike was only 14 when he started his on-air career as a sportscaster at his hometown radio station, WHK-WCLE in Cleveland, and WMRA, Canton, Ohio. Play Ball: NPC Night at Nationals Park on Sept. 10
Please join your fellow National Press Club members as we watch the Washington Nationals take on National League East rivals the Philadelphia Phillies. Game time is 7:05 p.m. on Saturday, September 10. Tickets in our left-field mezzanine section (a level lower than last year) are just $31 each, plus a small ticketing fee; guests of Club members are very welcome. Tickets must be purchased here. For more than 25 years, the Paul Miller Washington Reporting Fellowship has introduced promising young reporters to the city they now cover. From September to June, this one-day-a-month fellowship will give new(ish)-to-D.C. journalists an intensive and lively overview of reporting in the capital. Two documentaries to celebrate journalism at AFI festival
The American Film Institute’s annual film festival, AFI DOCS, features two journalism-related documentaries. “The Man Who Saw Too Much,” is about Mexican photojournalist Enrique Metinides’ 50 years of chronicling crime scenes. “Obit,” takes you behind the scenes of The New York Times obituary desk. Toastmasters meets at the National Press Club on the second and fourth Mondays each month from 7-8:30 p.m. The sessions are open to both Club members and the public, so come Monday, June 13, to hone your speaking skills. The National Press Club's American Legion Post 20 marked D-Day with a special tribute to long-time Club and Post member John Metelsky and a report on the Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial targeted for opening on D-Day 2019. Club President Thomas Burr greeted guest speakers and congratulated the Post 20 on being selected the "Outstanding Post" in the District of Columbia for 2015-2016 at the annual convention of the D.C. Broadcast Committee member Steve Taylor shares Reagan anecdotes
Club member Steve Taylor told the June meeting of the Broadcast Committee that his journalism career aligns neatly with the political career of honorary Club member Ronald Reagan, 40th President of the United States. Taylor was broadcasting results of the federal mid-term elections for college radio station WUVA, aided by a lone UPI printer outside the studio, in November of 1966 when Reagan was elected governor of California.
