Mike Hempen, vice-chair of the National Press Club Broadcast/Podcast Team and newsroom supervisor for the Associated Press, will speak at a conference on March 14 at the George Washington University School of Media and Public Affairs. "We left an Ozzie and Harriet country and came back to Clockwork Orange," Vietnam veteran Bill Lord told a Jan. 30 meeting of NPC American Legion Post 20 in talking about the book he thought he would never write. The retired general manager of WJLA-TV in Washington, D.C., said he did all he could to put behind him his 1967-'68 hitch as a 19-year-old Army infantry sergeant. NPC in History: Did President Harding really say this?
Warren Harding was one of us. Before he entered politics, he was the publisher of the Marion (Ohio) Star. In fact, the 1920 election pitted Harding against James M. Cox, the publisher of the Dayton (Ohio) Daily News. Whoever won, a journalist would be president. Harding signed up as a member of the National Press Club after arriving in D.C. as a senator in 1915. As the Club’s 1928 history said, “before entering the White House, and in the period following, Mr. Harding was a frequent visitor to the Clubhouse, for he liked to hobnob with those whom he liked to call his cronies in the writing…

Restricted entry to NPC building: 14th street entrance closed for construction, Jan. 29 and 30
The National Press Building will be temporarily restricting all entry and exit through the main 14th street entrance doors on Tuesday, Jan. 29, and Wednesday, Jan. 30, from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. National Press Club members and Club guests are asked to use the two additional entrances by Corner Bakery on 14th & F streets or the F street “Fox Arch” entrance.
