NPC Toastmasters meets Monday, April 24, in the McClendon Lounge at 7 pm
What would you say if someone asked you to explain why your car had a bumper sticker that read “Kindness is the language the deaf can hear and the blind can see?” At our last meeting Toastmasters were challenged to provide impromptu responses to exactly that question during a lively Table Topics session. What is a Table Topics session? It’s a standard part of our meetings where one member comes prepared with a series of prompts to solicit one to two minute responses from randomly-selected members. This exercise helps us learn to develop cogent responses in unexpected situations. The subject…

A snippet of Press Club history: First gathering of newly-announced Pulitzer winners
Snippet #23: "Pulitzer Luncheon: The year was 1979 and virtually all the newly announced winners of the annual Pulitzer Prizes for journalism gathered for an unprecedented luncheon at the National Press Club. At that time, there was no formal prize presentation ceremony in New York, so the Washington event marked the first time they all had been assembled--or saluted by their peers. The National Press Club--where news (some of it prize-worthy) is made in the nation's capital." This snippet is one of many put together by the late Art Wiese, who served as Club president in 1979. He was…

Art Wiese Speaks: Kissinger delivers farewell address
"Kissinger's Farewell: Henry Kissinger, secretary of State in both the Nixon and Ford administrations, delivered his farewell address at the National Press Club in January 1977. After reviewing the prospects for peace in the Mideast, Kissinger was surprised -- and visibly pleased -- when a belly dancer suddenly appeared before the podium and began her act. It was the Press Club's own humorous goodbye to one of the 20th Century's most famous diplomats. It happened at the Club -- where news (sometimes fun) happens in the nation's capital." This snippet is one of many put together by the late…

Marking centennial of America’s entry into World War I, here is what happened at Club
With membership booming, the National Press Club relocated in 1914 to expanded facilities atop what was known as the Albee Building at the corner of 15th and G Streets, N.W. Nearly a year before the United States declared war, President Woodrow Wilson spoke to the Club on May 15, 1916, about the worldwide conflagration and his burden in deciding what to do. The country’s fortunes, President Wilson said, are subject to the “incalculable winds of passion flowing from other parts of the world.” The strain, he said, is not to know “what turn of the wheel of fortune will take control of things out…
