Memorial service for Julie Schoo, beloved executive director of Club's Journalism Institute, set for June 21
The family of Julie Schoo has let the Club know there will be a memorial service for her at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 21, at Christ Church Georgetown, 3116 O Street NW, Washington, D.C.. Schoo, who served the National Press Club and its Journalism Institute for 33 years, passed away at home earlier this month. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Julie make a contribution to the National Press Club Journalism Institute in her name or to Christ Church. The National Press Club's Headliners Book Rap scheduled Tuesday, May 29, with Fox News Channel host Bret Baier has been cancelled due to a last-minute scheduling conflict by Baier. The event will not be rescheduled. Refunds are being issued to registrants. Baier was slated to discuss his new book, "Three Days in Moscow: Ronald Reagan and the Fall of the Soviet Empire."

Lions of the Club lost: NPC mourns former presidents Don Larrabee and Dave Hess
The National Press Club lost two of its former presidents within a day: Donald R. Larrabee, president in 1973, died July 18 at the Sunrise on Connecticut home in Washington; and David Hess, president in 1985, died July 19 at Riverside Methodist Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. Larrabee, 93, had become increasingly frail and suffered memory loss, according to his daughter, Donna Palmer. Hess’s death was reported by his nephew, Darren Burnham, who said that Hess, 83, was in rehabilitation for a recent fall when he was stricken. He had previously suffered several strokes.
