Amtrak President and chief executive Joseph H. Boardman will analyze passenger rail issues and preview the year ahead for Amtrak at a National Press Club luncheon on Friday, Jan. 10. On Oct. 7, 1994, I was Club president when Nelson Mandela spoke here during his first visit to the United States as president of the Republic of South Africa. Two things stand out about that day: First, the speaker advertised for that day was Wall Street tycoon Peter Lynch, and I had 300 people in a financial writers conference expecting to hear him. Ike Pappas, legendary broadcast journalist and late Club member, shared his detailed and chilling accounts of his coverage of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, in a 2006 interview for the Club’s Oral History project.
