Actor and gay rights advocate George Takei will speak about LGBT issues at a National Press Club luncheon on Friday, Oct. 18. Takei is best known for his role as Hikaru Sulu on "Star Trek," first as helmsman of the USS Enterprise and later as captain of the USS Excelsior. He has become an advocate for the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people and and for the rights of Japanese-Americans. A report on youth civic engagement will be released at a Club Newswmakers event at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 9, in the Bloomberg Room. The report, “All Together Now: Collaboration and Innovation for Youth Engagement,” was prepared by the Commission on Youth Voting and Civic Knowledge. Chen Guangcheng, a prominent Chinese human rights activist and political dissident, called on President Barack Obama administration to show greater commitment toward addressing what he said were human rights violations by the government in Beijing. On the heels of a four-state bus tour, Education Secretary Arne Duncan will speak at a the Club at 1 p.m. Monday, Sept. 30.
