Club members are invited to join “Friends of the Book Fair” in support of the Journalism Institute’s 36th Annual Book Fair & Authors’ Night, scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 19. “Friend of the Book Fair” contributions of $25 will support the institute, which provides training, research and resources for news professionals and scholarships for the next generation of journalists. Cpntributions are tax-deductible. Contributors will be acknowledged in the Book Fair Author Guide and on the website. They also will receive a raffle ticket and free admittance to the Book Fair. Exhibit and Discussion of Photojournalist John Launois Schedueld for Oct. 7
John Launois, the late photojournalist whose subjects included U.S. presidents, wars, and the Beatles, will be the subject of an exhibition and book discussion Monday, Oct. 7, at the Club. The reception will begin at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, in the Holeman Lounge and feature a cash bar and hors d'oeuvres. The discussion will begin at 6:45 p.m. and conclude with a signing and a discussion of his book, ``L'Americain: A Photojournalist's Life,'' that was co-authored by his son, Chris Pan Launois. Syrian Refugee Problem Is Subject of Oct. 8 Newsmaker
A club Newsmaker on Tuesday, Oct. 8, will focus on the refugee problem caused by the Syrian civil war. Sen. Robert Casey, Jr., D-Pa., sponsor of Syria Democratic Transition Act of 2013; and Neal Keny-Guyer, CEO of Mercy Corps, the leading responder to the Syria crisis, will discuss the situation on the ground and humanitarian efforts underway as refugees flood neighboring countries. The event begins at 10 a.m. in the Bloomberg Room.

First black Miss Israel embraces Ethiopian roots
Miss Israel Yityish "Titi" Aynaw, the country's first Ethiopian-born pageant queen, visited the Naitonal Press Club Sept. 25 as part of a U.S. tour. Aynaw, orphaned as a child and sent to live with her grandparents in Israel, is part of a small community of Ethiopian Jews. Aynaw, who became a model after completing her service in the Israeli Army, toured the Club and met with reporters and Club members. Club Vice President Myron Belkind presented Aynaw with the traditional NPC coffee mug. Aynaw, crowned in February, will represent Israel in the Miss Universe pageant Nov. 9 in Russia. In…

The Club is featuring an exhibit of the works of the late photojournalist John Launois, and a discussion of his book, ``L'Americain: A Photojournalist's Life,'' by his son and coauthor Chris Pan Launois.
