July 20, 1969: Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become the first and second humans to walk on the moon. Aldrin appears at a National Press Club Book Rap in 2013 and declares that he wants humans to walk on Mars before the end of the twenty-first century. Neil Armstrong lists the greatest engineering feats of the twentieth century in an appearance in 2000, listing space flight as #12, because he says it hasn’t had as great an impact on worldwide living standards as, for example, electrification (#1), the automobile (#2) and the airplane #3). Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan Cancels NPC Luncheon
CANCELLED: Nigeria President Goodluck Jonathan planned to talk about his country's struggle to contain violent campaign of Islamist group Boko Haram. The luncheon was set for Thursday, July 31. Jonathan will need to stay in Nigeria to work with Parliament on his emergency request to borrow $1 billion for the fight against Boko Haram.

South African President Zuma to speak at NPC Luncheon Aug. 4
President Jacob Zuma of South Africa will be the guest at a National Press Club Speakers Luncheon at 1:30 p.m. Monday, August 4, in the Ballroom. Zuma, who was first elected president in 2009 and re-elected in 2014, will speak on the eve of the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit in Washington August 5 to 6. Ex-POW Alvarez sees "nothing positive" in prisoner exchange
"I see nothing positive about it," retired Navy Cmdr. Everett Alvarez, Jr., the longest-held U.S. POW during the Vietnam War, said of the prisoner exchange that freed five Islamic terrorists for Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl. He was speaking at a meeting Thursday, July 17, of the NPC's American Legion Post 20.
