The White House and Veterans Administration on Tuesday came to the National Press Club to launch a program designed to prevent veterans from committing suicide -- illustrating the importance of the Club as a newsmaking venue as Washington begins to reopen. The event featured Second Lady Karen Pence, Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert Wilkie and U.S. Surgeon General Jerome Adams. The National Press Club announced yesterday that this year's national Night Out For Austin Tice, originally set for July 14, will be postponed until further notice amid concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tice, an award-winning journalist, was working for McClatchy and The Washington Post when he was detained in Syria in 2012.
