Former Louisiana Gov. Buddy Roemer, a Republican presidential candidate, will assert that large, anonymous campaign donations and special-interest money remain a corrupting influence on politics at a Newsmaker at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 15. Groundbreaking war photography exhibit opens at Club
Conflict Zone, a groundbreaking combat photography exhibit, will be on view from Aug. 8 to Aug. 29 at the National Press Club. Former Club President Allan Cromley dies
Former National Press Club President Allan Cromley died Aug. 8 after a three-month battle with pneumonia and an esophageal ailment. Cromley, who led the Club in 1968, established the Silver Owls. He was instrumental in keeping the Club functioning during the upheaval following the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. "Al Cromley was a stalwart Club member, someone you could count on to uphold the Club's traditions," former Club President Gil Klein wrote in an email. A new video tour of The National Press Club is now available on the Club website. In the tour, former Club President Gil Klein takes the viewer on a comprehensive walk-through of the National Press Building, particularly the Club's home on the 13th and 14th floors. Richard Hottelet, member of vaunted Murrow Boys, to be honored at Club awards dinner, Aug. 10
On a night when the National Press Club is honoring some of the best journalism being done today, it will also pay tribute to one of the pioneers of broadcast journalism. Richard Hottelet, now 93, was hired by Edward R. Murrow of CBS News as preparations for D-Day got under way in 1944. At 26 years old, he became a member of the vaunted Murrow Boys, the group of journalists credited with helping invent broadcast news.
