Getting into Multimedia 103 Class, Feb. 23-25
Several spots are still available for NPC members in the Getting into Multimedia 103 class, Tuesday through Thursday, Feb. 23-25. The class is the last in a series of three classes on learning and improving multimedia and is aimed at professional journalists and educators. You do not need to have participated in the previous classes to take the 103 class. The fee is $30 per class for NPC members. Each course takes place entirely online. A three-part series for reporters or Web producers will explain the how-tos of adding a video component to stories. The classes are March 11 and 26 and April 2 in the Bloomberg Center for Electronic Journalism . Costs vary and must be paid in advance; see details below. Suze Orman, Tavis Smiley to discuss consumer, poverty issues at Jan. 12 Newsmaker
Suze Orman, a popular personal finance guru, will speak about her “People First” movement on behalf of consumers to fight banks and their fees. Smiley, the PBS broadcaster, will highlight his efforts to restore the nation’s prosperity as more and more Americans slip into poverty and unemployment. ICANN CEO to announce launch of new Internet addresses at Jan. 11 newsmaker
ICANN President and Chief Executive Officer Rod Beckstrom and Board Chair Stephen Crocker will announce the launch of hundreds of new generic top-level Internet domains (gTLDs). ICANN's new gTLD program is the most significant change to the Internet's naming system since 1998. For the first time, generic TLDs can include words in non-Latin languages and scripts, such as Chinese or Arabic. The Newsmaker will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 11 in the National Press Club's Zenger Room.

Michael Isikoff, national investigative correspondent for NBC News, will lead a panel discussion about the presidency of Bill Clintonfollowing an exclusive screening of the forthcoming PBS biopic "American Experience: CLINTON." The Jan. 12 event begins at 7 p.m. in the First Amendment Lounge. The 30-minute screening will be followed by the panel discussion. Auto racing driver Danica Patrick will discuss her transition from IndyCar to fulltime NASCAR racing at a National Press Club luncheon on Tuesday, Feb. 21. Patrick will become only the third woman to compete in the Daytona 500 when she takes the green flag during her Sprint Cup Series debut at the season-opening 54th Annual Daytona 500 later that week. Put on your dancing shoes for a gala night to inaugurate and honor our 2012 National Press Club President Theresa Werner. NPC's Board of Governors will host In the Mood for News dinner dance on Jan. 28 in the ballroom. Tickets cost $95 per person and will include a cocktail hour, a three-course Americana dinner prepared by Chef Susan Delbert and plenty of libations.
