Selective Service System chief plans to discuss registering women at Newsmaker, Jan. 29
Lawrence G. Romo, director of the Selective Service System, plans to discuss registering women for any future draft at a National Press Club Newsmaker on Jan. 29 at 10 a.m. in the NPC's Zenger Room. Like all Newsmakers events, it is open to credentialed media and NPC members, free of charge. No advance registration is required. In December 2015, Defense Secretary Ash Carter announced that starting in 2016 all combat jobs would open to women. The Board of Governors will present “Our American Treasures,” a gala on Jan. 23, 2016, to celebrate the inauguration of Thomas Burr as the 109th president of the National Press Club. The Gala will begin with a reception at 6:30 p.m. in the Press Club's Holeman Lounge, followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. in the Ballroom. The event is black tie. The Political TV Ad Archive set to launch Jan. 22
The Internet Archive will launch on January 22 the Political TV Ad Archive, an online, free digital library resource where reporters can find federal level political TV ads in key primary states in the 2016 elections, married with fact checking and information on the organizations funding the ads, and downloadable metadata. The launch will be held in the National Press Club's Murrow Room, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The National Press Club Journalism Institute is cosponsoring this panel event. WWII resistance fighter to speak Jan. 27 at NPC American Legion Post 20 meeting
Julian Kulski, a noted American architect who as a teenager fought in the Polish uprising in World War II, will recount his incredible story and discuss lessons learned in resisting tyranny at a Jan. 27 meeting of NPC American Legion Post 20. The meeting will be held at noon in the Club's McClendon Room. All NPC members are invited to attend speaker portions of Post 20 meetings. Kulski was 10 years old in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland and triggered World War II. McCluskey wins top volunteer award for establishing Club on social media
A National Press Club member who established the organization’s presence on social media won the Club’s top volunteer award on Jan. 13. Molly McCluskey, an independent multimedia journalist, took control of the Club’s Twitter account in 2015 and increased its number of followers from 7,000 to 12,500 over the course of the year. She formed a special subcommittee of the Club’s Broadcast Committee that led the effort to systematically Tweet from Club activities, such as luncheons, Book Raps and other events.
